MY FAMILY PICTURE

My family lives in Kandy Sri Lanka, where both my parents work and my sister attends college. My parents build the house we live in 1979 and we have lived there for more than 20 years. I owe everything I am to my parents for not forcing me to learn about life and for most importantly giving me the opportunity to experience and make up my own mind.

MY SISTER - NISHAKA

MY FAMILY PICTURE

My sister was born on the 10th of August 1981 in Kandy Sri Lanka. Her full name is Nishaka Tharangani Dissanayake, but everyone call her Nishaka, Nisho, or Nish. She successfully completed her secondary education at Mahamaya College Kandy. She completed her G.C.E A/L's in 2000 receiving 3 A's and passing at the top of her school.

My sister is currently enrolled in the Medical Faculty of the University of Peradeniya. She is frequently complaining about the huge work-load they are forced to undergo in this rgorous medical course.

She too has lived in Sweden, Scotland, and USA where she attended school. She got exposed to many diverse and eye opening experiences that have made her the great sister and wonderful person she is.

After completing her A/L s she worked in the Post Graduate Institute of Science as Junior Research Assistant (JRA) where she engaged in various research projects.

MY MOTHER - Sujatha

MY FAMILY PICTURE

My mother was born on the 23rd of February, 1948, the year that Sri Lanka received independance. She was born in Udugama, Gampaha, where she went to school at Veyangoda Central. My mother has three brothers and one sister.

After successfully finishing her schooling my mother entered the University of Peradeniya where she obtained a bachlors degree in Physics. This is also where she met my father. Actually my father taught my mother while she was in the university.

My mother is currently teaching A/L physics at Pushpadana Balika Vidyalaya in Kandy. She is the strongest and most courageous woman I have ever met. She does all the house work, and has successfully ( though some might disagree :) ) brought up two kids while fulfilling all her duties as a teacher and mentor to her students. It was only after going to the US that I realised how much I value my mothers great cooking as well as everything she does for us at home. She is definitely the best mother ever.

The picure was taken was in August 2001 when my family were living in Sweden. (The cake is my sisters, not my mothers).

MY FATHER - Laxman

MY FAMILY PICTURE

My father was born on the 3rd of February in 1945 in Matara, the beautiful the sourthern tip of Sri Lanka. Unlike myself my father didnt have opportunity presented to him in a golden tray but he had to make most of life. I am proud to say that my father has come a long way from his start in a remote village among the lucious beaches of Sri Lanka but most importantly he has not forgotten his roots.

My father performed admirably in his early schooling and managed to enter the University of Peradeniya for his undergraduate degree. He has made this great institution his home ever after. My father completed his bachelors degree in Physics from the University of Peradeniya and then obtained his Ph.D. from Indiana University, Indiana, USA. Afterwards he joined the faculty at Peradeniya and has gone on to become the professor of Solid State Physics.

I think I have got the habit of multi-tasking from my father. He vigirously engages in research and has organised many international conferences and symposiums in solid state physics. His research interests and expertise means that he is frequently abroad taking, part in many presentations and conferences.

My father was also instrumental in producing the first Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Peradeniya. Presently my father is engaged in polymer research. He has also done a tremendous service to the education of the country by writing and printing five text books that have become essential to many teachers and students studying Physics for A/L's. The books are widely used by many students to gain a better understanding of physics and to help them prepare for the competitive A/L exams.

I am extremely proud of my father and look up to him as a role model is attempting to organise my life. I find it astounding that he has managed to achieve all that he has professionally and socially while being a perfect father who has been there when we have needed him. He is definetely the perfect father.

The picture was taken in Sweden, in August 2001, where my father was conducting research on polymer elctrolytes.
